    When I was young in the 50s and 60s, we used to roll back the rug in preparation for a dance. My father, a country doctor with a dispensary, used a potassium permanganate solution, a deep purple colour, to stain the bare boards. They came up a fine deep
    brown colour. (We then sprinkled french chalk of course).
