This article goes further than just Winston, but his statement about
the hole in the government finances certainly started a conversation.
Just as our economic position is complicated, and further complicated
by the mix of promises, expectations and reality, so the coalition is
complex, with ACT taking neoliberal extreme positions, but also
containing some single interest politicians - as well as a lot of
money. National has some that support the neoliberal views of ACT, but
they have some traditional conservatives as well; NZ First is a mix of
populism and single interest people - with one being a surprising mix
of Taxpayer Union politics with NRA-like views on firearms - Shane
Jones appears to be isolating himself, but may be able to use
provincial development as a tool to keep NZ First going after Winston
- but his inability to inspire anyone is likely to see any wishes of
leading the party frustrated - but that is for the future.
Each of the parties has internal and external enemies, and that is
just within the coalition - but the combining force is power - the
alternative is opposition, and they have all seen enough of that.
Interesting times . . .
