• Prime Minister's accomodation allowance

From Crash@21:1/5 to All on Fri Mar 1 13:46:15 2024
With the current controversy, here are the facts:

    https://www.parliament.nz/en/pb/parliamentary-rules/members-of-parliament-accommodation-services-for-members-and-travel-services-for-family-members-determination-2023-by-chapter/part-2-accommodation-services/

Of particular interest is clauses 16 and 17. Clause 17 specifically
applies to the current PM's situation. It is all clear and above
board given that the PM is the MP for Botany which is well outside the Wellington commuting area.

It should be noted that this clause is similar to the allowances
applicable to MPs from outside Wellington.

Note that nowhere is there any mention of who owns the property for
which the allowance is paid. If I recall correctly the practice of
MPs being a tenant in their own property in Wellington (whether or not
it is their primary residence) is widespread and of long standing.

Note that MPs for Wellington Electorates do not (and never have)
    qualify for this allowance.

Luxon has now made an entirely unforced error by committing to pay the
money back. This shows weakness, will encourage sniping from
journalists who want Luxon's head as a trophy, and gives the public
the impression that Luxon is guilty of some impropriety. Bad newbie
error by Luxon, who should have told the journalists to go to hell.

Agreed. He is showing signs of weak leadership.

And about time too How short a memory some have. Bill English admitted
his mistake on the same issue and repaid the money - it is really an
example of how short a memory the National Party have; but perhaps
they think of Bill English as having done that so long ago that
everyone would have forgotten - they don't really learn very easily,
    do they?

He was not guilty of any crime, just arrogance, putting self-interest
first, and all of that goes with the territory of being a National
    Party politician.

The PM has chosen to pay the money back to remove the distraction of it. However going by the tone of this thread the people want a distraction.

Luxon probably considered that this was not a battle to die for, or one he could not win.

I readily accept that C Luxon has some intelligence, but it is sadly
outweighed by his excessive self-interest, and his lack of ethical
principles that lead him open to bribery through political donations.
He is now being led by Winston Peters and David Seymour, and clearly
ignores his minders, who you would normally expect to have reminded
him of the effect of his claiming $52,000 a year for refusing to live
in free accommodation at Premier House. It is clear that to him
$52,000 is a very minor amount - sadly he is prepared to bash those
earning much less than that each year for any mistakes in trying to
live on the unemployment benefit and being unable to get a job.

I suspect however that Toy was merely trying to distract from the
reality that neither he or any other poster has been able to identify
any real example of real leadership from Luxon . . .

No lies, but the comments are still there Tony - had you forgotten
again? Tony again demonstrates that he cannot find any example of
leadership from C Luxon - certainly turning down free accommodation to
get $52,000 a year extra in his pocket is the sort of "me first"
attitude that we have come to expect from the Nats.

Nobody appears to be able to identify any example of real leadership
from C Luxon - you included Tony. The more he shows his weaknesses,
the more we get more extreme policies from Seymour and Luxon - they
are the real leaders of the coalition government.

Luxon has now made an entirely unforced error by committing to pay the
money back. This shows weakness, will encourage sniping from >>>>>>>>>>journalists who want Luxon's head as a trophy, and gives the public >>>>>>>>>>the impression that Luxon is guilty of some impropriety. Agreed. He is showing signs of weak leadership.

Has he ever shown any leadership?

    Of course - a pre-requisite of leading a political party into >>>>>>>Government.
So you have a real example of Luxon showing leadership?

Your question is as stupid as asking me to prove that water is wet.

That makes him the very definition of stupidity.
