• Why the Secrecy of the Special Votes?

From Willy Nilly@21:1/5 to All on Tue Oct 31 03:43:17 2023
What I don't understand is, why do the special votes not get published
daily? By now they must have 98% of them, so why not give the running
tally? Maybe it would be too much of a media-fest, or politicians
getting brain-overloaded with it all. I could be persuaded that it is
better to keep it a secret until Friday's announcement, but is this
covered by a regulation? Or is it just what they feel like doing.

What is being one is far more than just counting special votes. The
time frame is I have been told quite consistent with previous
    elections.

It takes time for some overseas votes to arrive in New Zealand, but
there are teams in quite a few places around New Zealand looking at
voted for local electorates. They will have received votes cast
anywhere in New Zealand, plus overseas. There may be votes from people
not on the roll where eligibility must be checked. They will check
for people voting more than once - that must require a master list to
be checked against. They will check the count for every electorate
(quick counts on election night are not always 100% accurate). There
will be scrutineers to look at unclear ballots - that is a well
practiced process that rarely causes problems, but it may take time.

Then there will be calculations - I presume by computer - that goes
through the well-established processes required to meet legal
requirements for allocation of party votes.

It is a fairly standard process, but it does take time. Usually the
results are not quite as close and it is easier to just get on with
things, but I doubt Winston is keen on trying to agree much until he
    knows those results.

Gee whiz, Rich, if you're gonna type all that stuff, can't you at
least try to answer the actual question? I asked why they don't just
give us daily updates of the vote total so far, day by day, and you
answered everything *except* the question asked. So you wasted my
time too, searching your answer for something relevant.

Have the covid shots drained your brain of comprehension skills? Get

If you think about the processes they are going through, there is no
meaningful ability to provide results daily. The parties that have
scrutineers may have an idea for their local electorates, but numbers
for a particular candidate may in theory go up or down as the process
proceeds. For the party vote, they may still be finding votes that
have to be excluded (eg voting twice). 3 November is getting fairly
close though; they may well have finished or nearly finalised
electorate seats, but the calculation for list MPs needs all votes
finalised. That was all in what you call irrelevant stuff - but
perhaps you never had comprehension skills to start with . . .

There is some element of truth in this. Remember that we are counting the
votes again to get the total, as in final votes. The people are happy with
the final figures 21 days later after the election nights results which
shows the indication, and the conceeding as necessary.
