Former chief Republican strategist, Lincoln Project adviser, and
bestselling author of It Was All a Lie, Stuart Stevens offers an
ominous warning that the GOP is dragging our country toward
autocracy—and if we don’t wake up to the crisis in our system, 2024
may well be our last free and fair election.

Today’s Republican party is not a “normal” political party in the
American tradition. It has become an autocratic movement masquerading
as a political party. As Stuart Stevens argues in THE CONSPIRACY TO
END AMERICA, if we look away from that truth, we greatly increase the likelihood that the America we love will slip away, never to return.

Whenever a democracy slides into autocracy, there are five critical
elements at work: financers, propagandists, party support, legal
theories to legitimize, and shock troops. THE CONSPIRACY TO END
AMERICA examines each of these driving forces on the Right and makes
clear how they are working in concert to end our democracy as we know
it. In the tradition of It CanÂ’t Happen Here and On Tyranny, THE
CONSPIRACY TO END AMERICA is a blinking red distress call about the
dark intentions lurking within StevensÂ’ old party and a rallying cry
to beat back this perilous threat and save the Republic. ____________________________________________

There are parallels with all the Five Eyes Countries, as well as
others. The Republican Party has been regarded as an exemplar of right
and far right legitimacy, but even while the Republican Party in the
USA has been captured by crazies, it is still copied and followed to
an extent by Conservative parties in other countries.

It is interesting to look for measures of autocracy - one measure is
    given here: https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/democracy-index-polity?tab=chart&country=AUS~NZL~CAN~GBR~USA
where it is perceived that both the UK and USA have dropped recently
in terms of how democratic they are,
    and here: https://freedomhouse.org/countries/freedom-world/scores?sort=asc&order=Country

which shows scores for "Freedom" of
    Australia 95
    Canada 98
    New Zealand 99
    United Kingdom 93
    United States 83
    and from here: https://freedomhouse.org/country/new-zealand/freedom-world/2023
we see that New Zealand misses on a perfect score through:
"Concerns include discrimination against the Maori and other minority populations, as well as reports of foreign influence in politics and
    the education sector."

Our most autocratic party is clearly ACT, followed by NZ First,
National, Labour and The Greens (leaving aside the smaller parties)

it is not surprising then to find that The Taxpayer Union (a funding
front for both ACT and National) assisted and promoted "Freedumb"
protests as part of it's disinformation attacks on Labour; wrongly
claiming libertarian principles and "freedom of expression'' as an
excuse, merely as a way to attack the government. Essentially both
those parties embraced the dishonesty of the Trump Republican
campaigns. Look for our score on equal treatment of various segments
of the population to decline further under ACT/National . . .

We have seen National exploit financers, propagandists, party support,
legal theories to legitimize, and perhaps we have shock troops still
    to come . . .

Once again we need to realise that the author has got the GOP and the
Democrats reversed. It is the Democrats who are trying to screw things up.

And now can we take this to alt.politics.trump.

which shows an assessment that Labour is on their chart +6 to the
Right of Centre, and +4 Authoritarian, compared to NZ where National
are at +8.5 Right and +6 Authoritarian, and NZ First +7.5 Right, +7.5 authoritarian , and ACT +10 Right and -2 Libertarian

    and for the USA

same methodology and measurement basis, at that time they assessed
Biden at +7.5 to the right of centre, and + 6.5 Authoritarian, with
    Trump at +8.5 / +8.5

in my view Biden would be unelectable as an MP in New Zealand, let
alone as leader of a major party - it is an indication of how broken
their limited democracy is that there still appears to be a chance he
will be a candidate in 2024! The Republicans are hardly an example of
a coherent political party either however - the support for trump is
still strong, and they have shown poor political ability with their
problems over a leader for the Senate which they control.

The fact you rhapsodise about it confirms for most it'll be bogus like so many of your posts in this ng Rich!
You do get nasty when you find your opinions are not shared, don't you
    Tony? . . .

you are the only one who gets nasty at Tony's very accurate and unbiased opinions Rich. Maybe because nobody in the ng ever appreciate your biassed opinions...
