"She said she was on a moderate income of about $75,000 – earning too much to qualify for assistance but not enough to be comfortable."

This article got me wondering? Would you consider $75k to offer a
    compfortable life style.

We do not have her age, or city/town she lives in.

The point is made that two incomes are larger than one and this helps when living together.

I am sure that there are many houseld income in this country which are $75,000k.

Pauline seems to be implying that she needs some finanical assistance to be comfortable.

While retired people probably have no mortgage the superannuation they
recive is and $75K and they are able to live of it. Sure they would probably accept more if it was offered.

Average salary is $61,828 which is less than the $75k

All this tends to lead me to believe that her expectation could be on the
high side. However there could well be other factors involved.

Looks to me like the sort of idiot who is incapable of managing her finances. With the financial management skills a lot like Grant Robertson!

Pauline does not seem to consider why many single people join with
have others living with them because they cannot afford to live alone.
Why does she not consider renting out a bedroom as many other singles
    do?
