    quickly get to know that few journalist jobs are full time, many are
    paid for work accepted; they know that the priorities are to get

    make the owners happy. Priorities therefore are conflict or
    controversy, to give the appearance of close competition where
    possible, and to look after the interests of those that have money to

    Currently the polls are not particularly useful - National is lagging
    and Luxon is clearly ineffective; so they are not publishing the
    percentage of people that refuse to answer or don't give an answer to particular questions (or even the poll itself), and interpret results
    to try and help National get a bit closer.

    Opinions are cheaper than real news, and 'reporters' know that quick
    surveys can get across any opinion they want. News media know that
    opinions are as valuable as real reporting - The Hosk has developed
    that into an art form of the print equivalent of shock jock radio -
    possibly as close to Trumps 'mis-statements' as any other person with
    an audience that we have in New Zealand - but while some will agree
    with everything he says, others will disagree - and all that sells!

    Those that work for a Murdoch newspaper know how to write to get
    printed - those that don't like can go free-lance, or try to get into
    corporate publicity (the tobacco industry has groomed quite a few
    politicians over the years), or give up and write their own blog for
    the gullible - like Du Fresne . . .

    So you say the polls are not particularly useful and yet you draw conclusions form them. That is really stupid.

    Tony wrote a comment after the one above by John Bowes, and I did
    respond when I read it. I do not however feel obliged to respond to
    every post. There was a time when it was accepted practice to delete unnecessary material to keep messages short and save band-width -
    those days are long gone; the deletion was because John Bowes deletes
    material that he does not like and has no valid objection to.
