National has got much bigger problems than an unpopular leader

OPINION: It was a line that probably sounded good down at the golf club.

Nicola Willis’ knee jerked so hard to the news Labour will remove prescription fees that she smacked herself in the face.

Out came the most miserly National budget offering since Bill English’s 2012 paper boy tax: as finance minister she would snatch back that $5.

More reading for you, JohnO and Tonyyyyyy, if you can bear the mortification....

    Do you do anything?

Tony will be on at you for changing the subject of the thread, Bill.
Perhaps you would be better asking generally in a new thread what all
posters to nz.general do for a living - could you start with yourself?

And the relevant url to bring us back to the subject of the thread is: https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/opinion/132090938/national-has-got-much-bigger-problems-than-an-unpopular-leader

Personally I don't think Nicola Willis shows much knowledge of
financial matters relating to a government at all; she does not appear
to be getting advice from those that can help her, but we have had
Ministers of Finance who relied heavily on Treasury and Reserve Bank
for all decisions in the past; the problem for National is that they
are coming across as just plain nasty, and she is part of that. The
    Wellington Central electorate has had a National Party MP in the past;
Nicola Willis has shown little talent to make any inroads on Grant
    Robertson.

A pity Rich that your comments are not about the contents of the
article - which is mostly about limiting the prescription fee
exemption to those who hold Community Services and SuperGold cards,
    along with National leadership speculation.

I agree that this is very poor optics. Announcing this change needed
very clear framing along the lines of eliminating the prescription fee
for "rich pricks" (hat-tip to Michael Cullen) was irresponsible and
should be limited to Community Services and SuperGold cardholders.
National bombed this badly. The detail is OK.

It is a trivial issue compared to nationwide co-governance and the
3-waters reset that Labour have announced.
