It has not always been that way. Holyoake and Kirk and those that
went before them did not stoop to this IIRC. It started with Muldoon, particularly in respect of his allegations about Moyle, but there were
probably other incidents during the Muldoon years.
Part of the problem is that people have become too thin-skinned in
respect of tolerating others with a different view. Social Media have
enabled subscribers to do this at will meaning that the volume of
attack messages gets way higher than in pre-internet days.
Robust calling-out of personal attacks needs to be widely practiced by
our politicians.
