Those Italians have got a (so called) CO2 battery up and running.
It is not a silver bullet but the concept does work. It really is a big heat pump. Take the CO2 is a big dome, compress it to about 700bar, save the
heat, then let the compressed gas co back through the turbine (another one)
and you have shaft power. The expanded gas goes back to the big dome
awaiting for compression. This happenes when there is excess power
generation from wind and solar.
The size is rather large, not going to be on your EV any time soon, but it
may well be sitting next to the solar and wind farms. This would solve, at least in part, that solar and wind energy can not supply the power 24/7.
The technology for the CO2 battery is bog standard. No rare earth metals
were mined in its construction.
There is disavantages but all systems do. It it a case of finding its
strengths and using them.
