There has been some comments on the Mayor of Auckland falling short.
In the time line we have, from the Mayor
7.55pm Wayne Brown tells RNZ, “We just need the rain to stop, that’s the main issue”.
I am sure many people who needed help did not see it that way.
Reading through that time line leaves one with the feeling that they were
not prepared. The Met service flagged the possibility of a great day of
rain, a day ahead. The NZTA just went home at 8pm, the Mayor seemed
reluctant to issuse an emergency and until then the civil defence can not
get going. People were looking for the "one source of truth" or at least
some help, and information.
With the warning from the Met service, the hope for the best and prepare for the worst should have been upper most in their minds and this communicated
to the residents.
The residents have been let down. An apology is in order.
