• Wanted: Haswell Socket 1150 CPU

From ~misfit~@21:1/5 to All on Tue Mar 16 13:07:57 2021
    XPost: nz.wanted

Just a shot in the dark... I don't suppose anyone here has a quad-core Haswell CPU sitting around
surplus to requirements and that they don't want the earth for? (A cooler for it would be a bonus too.)

I've got a bargain on a socket 1150 based PC that I was going to use as a spare machine for light
gaming for guests / backup. I have a GPU that's adequate and I've added to the existing 4GB of RAM
with an 8GB stick out of my main machine but the dual-core Pentium that's in it isn't up to the
task. I tried it with Path of Exile but it's CPU-bound and unplayable. (My main machine is running
an i7 4790 and runs it smooth as silk so something in between the two should be fine.)

Then I'll just get a cheap 120 GB SSD for it and it'll be fit for purpose.

    Cheers,

Yes - and some of very long standing!

Indeed! I found a CPU that I could afford on Trademe and it's currently being taken for a drive
around the North Island by the courier. Aramex. They picked it up from Manukau yesterday, had it in
Pukekohe South today but then took it to Mt Roskill! Maybe I'll get it tomorrow...

It's an i5 4570S, nothing hugely powerful but it has the bonus (by virtue of being an "s" model) of
being able to run using the same cooler that's sitting on the Pentium G3260 that's in the
motherboard at the moment. That's saved me a few dollars and hopefully it'll do what I want of it.

    Goodnight gents,

Aramex used to be completely mis-named Fastway Couriers. Changing their name has not helped them. My belief is that their problem is that they are a franchise organisation and there are several areas that have no franchisee. When they need to deliver in one of those areas they send it on to another company. It has happened to me several times and we are not rural either. We had one delivery sent from 60kms away that took 4 days.

Hi Tony - good to 'see' you here.

Fastway! That's right, thanks. I knew it was one of the shite couriers that had undergone a
re-name. Fastway were (are) even worse than Post Haste. Back when they were Fastway they often told
me that I was rural. I don't know the number of times I told them that 'rural' has a defined
meaning and according to the local council I'm not rural. They told me that they have their own
    definition.

I haven't had this issue since they've been Aramex, in fact I saw an Aramex van deliver to my
neighbour a couple of days ago. I've had them deliver here quite often since their name-change and,
other than being a couple of days slower than NZ Post they've been reliable. Maybe this time it
went through the hands of an old Fastway worker?

    Cheers,
