It jumped back to wanting to download all posts like it was new. I said
no just 500. Then it kept saying these groups weren't on the server.

I'm seeing similar issues -- seems to be something awry with
blocknews. I see hundreds of thousands of headers being
downloaded in groups I'm fairly caught-up with.

It might just be an overview thing. Pan can handled it...usually.
