There are a *lot* of messages that aren't accounted for in this table.
I suppose it's vaguely on-topic here to ask: are these statistics only looking at the X-Newsreader header and not User-Agent?
It would appear so.
Are there semantic differences between the two?
A little personal story. Since sometime early 2003, I've configured trn
to identify itself in headers as
User-Agent: Vectrex rn 2.1 (beta)
Prior to that, it was "X-Newsreader: Sony Playstation 5.0MIPS". I recall changing when I saw some official or semi-official document which
specfied "User-Agent" as the preferred header for identifying the news
reader software. I see the rare occaisional post where news readers used
are summarized. I'm always an oddball in those.
I don't have any saved posts for this group before 2006 handy, so I
can't say what I read in 2003 to convert me to the non-X header. And
because web browsers also use that header, finding references with
search engines is difficult.
Or is this just an oversight in how these statistics are being
collected?
I think these stats are at best entertainment and at worst spam.
Elijah
