Yeah, I can't see anyone likely to object if you try to re-purpose a
    fried out group ...

I would post "Is this group in use?" and if there is no answer in a
week, use it. If someone with a better claim comes later to object,
decamp to elsewhere. That would offend nobody.

I note that this thread has already been silently crossposted to c.a.s.
    Poor form, that, IMHO.

Why so? Seems like it killed two birds with one stone.

(snecked off c.a.s for this post)

What does that have to do with failing to make an explicit statement "I
added a newsgroup to the crosspost" to give the user writing the
    followup a head's up?

You're having a meta discussion in one newsgroup. You don't need it to
be crossposted. You've been advised. If you want to let people know that
you're starting AI discussion in the other newsgroup, then do so.

At the moment, there's no activity in the other newsgroup, so there's
no purpose to a meta discussion in that newsgroup. Just start on-topic discussion without further discussion about discussion.

You're right, I did do that, and I should have said something. Sorry
    about that.

Sounds good, thank you for your candor.

It's rude to trick people into posting somewhere they didn't intend.
I've seen your apology later in the thread, no need to respond to this.
