I've created a new whatsapp public group called News UK, the subject of
which is naturally - uk news - focusing on the truth and the goings on
    behind the headlines
here's the link if you want to join:

    https://chat.whatsapp.com/EKfQGxeJ36HIYvNPIze9nY

of course nutters and troublemakers will be booted and blocked.
    have fun.

Why not create a Usenet newsgroup? WhatsApp is owned by Facebook, a lot
of sensible people would rather avoid them.

I don't like facebook either and I don't have a fb account however there's nothing facebookey about whatsapp. it's faster and more convenient than a usenet group

Well apart from the fact that data on who you contact via WhatsApp is
collected by Facebook... your messages on WhatsApp might be encrypted,
but the other data is not. Facebook do not believe in your privacy.

I don't use Facebook but I did once use Instagram and in the suggested
profiles that cropped up regularly on Instagram in the 'people you might
know' section were profiles of people that I had only contacted via
WhatsApp. So yes, there is a lot Facebookey about WhatsApp!

    Try Signal instead.

Plenty of meta-data harvesting opportunities even when the content is encrypted. I also prefer to avoid anything FB.

Usenet is well served for UK groups that could serve this purpose:

    uk.current-events.general
    uk.media.newspapers
    uk.news
    uk.org.community
    uk.politics

These for example could cover the content.

    Faster? Maybe.

    More conventient? No.

And what about other messaging apps, like Signal and Telegram?

And the thing about being "Facebookey" -- it's not whether or not it's Facebookey, but whether or not interested people are willing to use
    it.
