• Which groups are for Usenet-specific discussion?

    From "O. Bronn@21:1/5 to All on Wed Dec 22 19:38:25 2021
I want to learn everything about Usenet that I can so I can
eventually run a server. This includes administration, culture, software config, requests, peering, proposals, utilities, moderation, rules, and
tricks. Therefore I should follow active groups related to Usenet itself
    as the topic of discussion.

So far I have found some Usenet administrative discussion in these
    groups:

    ----------------------------------------
    alt.config
    alt.fan.usenet
    alt.usenet.peering
    alt.usenet.reposts
    news.admin.peering
    news.announce.newgroups
    news.groups
    news.groups.proposals
    news.misc
    news.software.nntp
    ----------------------------------------

What other groups am I missing? I want to be sure to stay abreast of everything being posted on the subject of Usenet, especially information
    posted by sysops.

    Thank you for your help!

There are a lot of newsgroups about usenet, but most are empty or just spam. The (other) ones I follow:

    alt.free.newsservers (a lot of spam)
free.control (about the free.* hierarchie) news.admin.hierarchies
    news.admin.net-abuse.usenet (a lot of spam)

    I do not follow:

free.usenet (because of too many messages)

    You're welcome!

    Many thanks!

I'm still undecided between choosing INN or Rocksolid for the news
server software. If you have any suggestion I'm glad to hear it. If
there are any particular docs I should be familiar with I should like to
have links so I can get busy with RTFM.

I've been running INN for years and am happy with it. I don't know
    anything about Rocksolid.

Start with clearly defining what you want to do. Or at least as much as
you can. Chances are good that your originally stated goal will change
    as you learn things.

    - Do you want to run a private NNTP network?
    - Do you want to run a public Usenet server?
    - Do you want to do a hybrid?
    - How many servers do you want to run?
    - How many end users do you plan on connecting to any given server?
-- This sort of speaks to how the server is optimized; end user access, transit, hybrid, something else.

I think the most important things that I can impress upon you, or anyone
else wanting to start $ANYTHING, is to:

    - be honest about your abilities to both yourself and others,
    - ask questions / for help when you need, or even want, it.

Aside: You can email me directly if you have questions. I'm happy to
help people get started. When you're ready, I'll even peer with you.

There is such discussion now. You just participated in it. More's the pity.

Who died and made you king moderator of the whole Usenet? We can discuss anything we want without consulting you about it.

    Seamus says hi.

I've seen some malformed "From:" lines in my time, but this one wins
    the prize.

I'm amazed that AIOE passed it as fit for posting.

    Btw: Fuck off, wannabe troll.
