David,
Thanks for raising this point.
I think there might be a case made for that, but today there are
hundreds of cryptocurrencies, quite a few radically different, with corresponding diversity in protocols.
Bitcoin is still the "original" and most widely known cryptocurrency,
with very active protocol development with ~ 5x higher daily transaction volume and about the same factor higher market capitalization than the current next contender, Ethereum - which is a very interesting protocol deserving of its own discussion (with its advanced support for smart contracts etc.)
I believe it would dilute conversation significantly for readers if they
had to filter out the talk for the particular cryptocurrency protocol(s)
they are interested in.
Maybe, to anticipate future needs and provide better structure, a
Bitcoin discussion group could be set in such a way?

I have no objection in principle to the creation of this group. However, I >wonder if the proponent has any research that suggests the group will be >used? Does the proponent intend to actively promote the newsgroup if
created? If so, how? A suggestion, if I may, would be a dedicated Twitter >account which automatically Tweets links to new group posts, much like that >in my .sig for uk.radio.amateur.moderated.

Could it be better to name it ".bitcoin" but use for all
cryptocurrencies anyway?
