• Deleting spam

    From Eli@21:1/5 to All on Thu Mar 16 19:53:52 2023
    Most newsgroups contain quite a few spam messages.
    I know that there are tools that scan incoming messages for spam, but what if the spam messages are already on the local server? How can these be removed?

    I believe that single messages can be removed via 'ctlinnd cancel Message-Id', but is that the only way or are there better solutions to remove (a lot of) spam?

    You can cancel them if your server accepts such cancels, this depends
    on the operator's policy

    It should be possible to write rulesets that reject articles that have
    certain attributes. This needs to be implemented by the server operator.

    You can also create filter rules in your newsreader.

    You've mentioned the only safe way that I know of.

    That's all that I'm aware of to do from the server side.

    You /might/ be able to read and cancel messages from the client side if everything matches the way that it needs to. Though I'd think server
    side would be better.

    If you are running your own server then you should not be doing
    anything to delete or filter posts that are not generated from your
    own server. The newsgroup is broken because of some idiot server
    administrators trying to keep themselves busy by creating
    unnecessary filters and spending time deleting something that is not
    their business. <br>
    <br>
    Users can create filters in their own newsreader and machines. They
    are free to take control of their own lives!!!<br>
    <br>
    If somebody is posting illegal stuff on your server then you should
    report him or her to the authorities and let them deal with the
    matter. Why do you want to get involved with filtering anything?
    Even Chinese are not filtering posts so what made you think that you
    know better?<br>

    That should work fine. Another option might be NoCeM, but using it just for yourself
    might be overkill.

    Either way, what I do is save spam messages to a folder on my local machine, and
    use a script to grep info necessary to delete with NoCeM. A script could also be
    easily written to work with ctlinnd cancel:

    Copy the spam messages to a folder, run your script and output a file of just message-ids. Then you can use another script on the server to just loop through and cancel each msgid one by one.
