Yet another nntp service is borked with no word from its owner.
The Rocksolid Usenet / NNTP servers are no longer authenticating to
allow posts.
There is no word from the admin yet on what is going on. In fact the
admin has yet to acknowledge that he is still alive.
AIOE went down with no word from the admin for weeks.
Mixmin went down with no word from the admin for weeks.
Rocksolid went down with no word from the admin for weeks.
The admins of these three services have vanished without a trace or a
word about their vanishing services.
Hmmm....
Why would an administrator make no statement acknowledging the status of
a service that has gone down or is broken?

Surprised to see AIOE as MIA.

Mixmin isn't down. Posting via port 563 works, but it is delayed.
119 is broken.
Mixmin stopped taking feeds on January 27th.

'And the band played on'. Enjoy what's left of Usenet while it's
still going. It'll die soon enough, when the last Usenetter falls
off his perch.

I managed to post to Mixmin and it propagated to solani.org.
Maybe some peerings are faulty.
It also does not apply to very post that has been submitted via Mixmin,

I've considered adding the ability for people with accounts to use my -- currently transit -- news server as a end user access server.
The server exists and it would be minimal additional effort to allow
people to use it.

If you can accept the additional hassle, it would undoubtedly be
an asset to Usenet. That potential hassle is surely the overriding consideration. Myself, I would welcome another server.

You have to move on, Snipe. There will never be another a.u.k.
That good time feeling can't be gotten back. No server is
going to amount to the same thing. I seem to remember
kensi having something to do with it. I guess she broke it.
Now there's none left for us.

I don't follow: what has this to with alt.usenet.kooks? That place
has been a smoking crater for years. It's only people like the idiot Derbyshire who try to keep AUK going when everybody else has
abandoned it.

They can. They can user other free NNTP servers to post to groups.

The main thing stopping me thus far is I'm not willing to put in the
time and effort to make a form to streamline the process for people to request accounts.
If people want to email me and ask for an account, I'll seriously
consider it and quite likely reply with details.
I will require:
- an account that is specific to and identifies the requesting
individual to their public persona. Recognized / well known nicknames allowed.
- the individual is the only person that uses the account.
I need the ability to terminate someone if they abuse the free service.
If you are interested and okay with requirements, then send an email.
Thank you for your kind offer, Grant. I already have a good
primary server and a backup so I won't bother you just now,
but I'll certainly ask in case of need. :)

I'm glad that yours was only a near death experience and not an actual
death experience.
Welcome back to the land of Usenet, where some people are happy to see
you -- Hi -- and others want to complain about you.

I'm good, thx :) Last test (biopsy) about 10 days ago said negative and I feel pretty good. It's a crazy way to retire early, lol. Note to everyone, you really don't want pancreatic cancer, find something better to have :)
I've thought for a while to post something in advance in case I disappear forever so people know to not expect any further administration and when I saw this post I figured, why not just reply here.
Anyway, if all continues as it's going, I may be around for a while longer just to create software bugs and the occasional false positive nocem :)

I'm sorry to hear, belatedly, that you were ill. I hope you make a full recovery, soonest.
Did anyone figure out for sure why AIOE died back around February
2023?

I remember using Albasani until that operator died. See: http://al.howardknight.net/?STYPE=msgid&MSGI=%3C1kn498q.o2v802173ewlcN%25board%40big-8.org%3E
Someone (don't remember who)
picked up the tab (effort & money) for a
while to keep albasani.net alive, but it eventually died, too.
