Freedyn was discontinued, but the news server on nntp4.net still exists. Freedyn offered other services that are indeed discontinued.

Nah, my script connects to select known public servers and checks a
couple groups from news.* aus.* and rec.* to see if they can be found,
and if exists gets a known article from one of those groups to make sure
    it is readable.

(the script started out being a propogation tester when once had
complaints posts weren't getting out, that script proved everytime the
issue was not with the server, of course I cant test some public servers because of 480 AUTH errors)

Thanks for your input. You are 'technically' correct if a server
doesn't carry something in the control listing it is 'incomplete' or
'not full' but operationally I see the definition as more fuzzy.

NUO:news.usenet.ovh carries over 15K groups across many hierarchies and
big* groups. Therefore I now list it as a full text feed. Defining FTF
is fuzzy, especially considering alt and foreign hierarchies can be
subjective, and how many abandoned groups outweigh active groups.

I realize that it doesn't carry everything in the control server
listings, but most groups are defunct anyway. The sysop is there and
responds to inquiries so anyone wanting to add a group is not left
hanging. That's good enough for my subjective, fuzzy definition. Most
casual users don't get down into the nitty-gritty meanings of such
things so I think it's fine.

names like fediverse, and their befitting pentagon logo, aren't
    charming to civilians either
    (https://duckduckgo.com/?q=pentagon+logo+fed-iverse)
even so, some of those insiders might be curious about the outside
world and discover these old-fashioned unmoderated usenet newsgroups
where the veritable untamed wild west of uncensored free speech is
    everyday normal

    We shall persevere ...

they have always persevered . . . not even noah's flood was enough to
do them in ... they came back and populated the earth with their kind

somehow usenet newsgroups still exist and hundreds of them are active
or very active ... could outsiders actually be dead without realizing
it? you know, like in that 2001 movie with nicole kidman 'the others'?
(yes, cf. bruce willis in shyamalan's 1999 thriller 'the sixth sense')

it might explain why insiders never pay any attention to the outsider,
insiders like to say "usenet is dead": are outsiders trapped in limbo?
