• Usenet Administrator Mailing list?

Is there currently a mailing lists for hobbyist/text-only usenet server
admins? Would anyone be interested in one, if there's not one now?

    Hi Jason,

Is there currently a mailing lists for hobbyist/text-only usenet server admins? Would anyone be interested in one, if there's not one now?

There's one in French language, but only 1 or 2 mails by year
    (essentially to announce outage issues).
What subjects would you have been interested in discussing in such a mailing-list? Couldn't newsgroups do the job?

I'm not aware of such a mailing list.

If there is one, I'd like to join it.

If there is not one, I'd prefer sticking with Usenet, as that's the
primary medium for the topic at hand.

That being said, having some email addresses to notify people of
problems or ask for help when the primary medium isn't working is a good
    idea.

Or use some other usenet server to post about outage. I personally like
to check sometimes, how usenet looks from some other site.

    Hi Julien,

Primarily, I think about it would be about the following:

    Technical support questions
News admin advice (less technical, more general)
General discussion about actually running a server, experiences, etc.

The end goal would hopefully to develop a "community" of those of us who
run News servers and who are not to running news server (like me). We
wouldn't necessarily be a new "backbone cabal" but we could help each
other out when we need to.

    Couldn't newsgroups do the job?

Possibly. I seems like some of this is happening in news.software.nntp
and news.admin.peering. I was thinking about a central place for
discussion which would be ideal for a mailing list. Perhaps we could
resurrect news.admin.misc since it doesn't seem to get much activity
    anymore.

Traditionally - at least for the last few decades -, such discussions
have been taking place in news.software.nntp. So the actual use was and
is much wider than just the original 'The Network News Transfer
    Protocol.' one-line description.

The end goal would hopefully to develop a "community" of those of us who
run News servers and who are not to running news server (like me). We wouldn't necessarily be a new "backbone cabal" but we could help each
other out when we need to.

news.software.nntp already is that very community. For example, I used
to run a News server in a big (150K employee) company, now only run a personal/private one (Hamster), but still subscribe to news.software.nntp.

For trying to move the audience to another place or/and medium, we
need a very good reason. Sofar, I've not seen such a reason.

That said, welcome to the group!

    Hi Jason :)

As far as I know there is nothing. I'm open to joining if you spin one up.
I guess the question is, is there benefit in having those discussions in
an email list versus a newsgroup of some sort?

    Anyway, hello and welcome.

    Hey Guys,

Even if the post is older, I'll pick it up.

I don't think the idea is bad, I made a mailing list myself. This is
only used to notify that a new post has been sent in news.admin.peering
    or other groups.

A second discussion platform on a secondary medium is a great idea if
your own server has problems. However, the admin groups can be accessed
very quickly via other news servers. Therefore, relatively few would
    sign up for the list.

The mail list is currently read-only and is fed by news.admin.peering
and alt.usenet.peering. This is currently used by me and another admin.

Enabling the mail list to be written so that incoming mails are also
written to the newsgroups are just two small settings.

If anyone is interested, I am happy to approve the mailing list.

I wish you a pleasant start to the week.

    Greetings,

i think you could make news.admin with the big 8 board and you will have a usenet group(you run a usenet server so use the USEnet!!).
