Here's what I found works for me - turn OFF the number lock on the 9-key pad (side number keypad on your keyboard) and push the "0" key (mine has "ins" on the 0 key). Once you do that, the cursor should start blinking again to show you are out of theoverwrite mode and then you can put your number lock back on and use the 9-key pad as usual. Mine always turns on and off when I don't realize that I have accidently turned off the number lock and then I try to type a number.
