A truck plowed through a Christmas market in Germany's capital on Monday evening, killing at least nine and injuring 50, a spokesman for the Berlin police said.
Yes, we already heard that already. Those of us who read INTERNATIONAL
news, REPUTABLE sources such as Deutsche Welle (dw.com) instead of
staring blankly at the bouncing boobs on CNN or Fox, would know that
the official death toll has risen to 12, and the official number of
injured reduced to 48.
Not that it really matters, but I was in Berlin when the truck attack
in Nice, France occurred. Not speaking German, I was unsure what the
TV was saying while I ate breakfast, but I knew it was really bad. Later
that day I learned the details, and for the rest of my eurotrip I was
totally on edge.
There was this enormous amount of sadness in every country I went to in
July. All flags were at half-staff. Everyone was on edge. There were makeshift memorials galore, filled with flowers, sympathy cards, stuffed animals, etc. It really put a damper on the rest of my trip, but like
the Europeans, I managed to go on with my daily life.
If there is a moral to my pathetic little story, it is get far out of
the way when you see a large truck heading down the road. Don't be
crossing the road or be on the sidewalk. Slink into any alley, run
behind a building, whatever.
One of the saddest memorials I saw was in front of the French embassy
in Copenhagen, sometime between July 18-20). I took lots of photos
(which I will post shortly), but had no words to say to the officials
coming and going from the embassy.
