• Requirement to file 10 or more information returns for 2023 electronica

    From Adam H. Kerman@21:1/5 to All on Mon Jan 8 17:28:29 2024
If anyone reading Usenet is affected, just a reminder of the new
requirement that information returns must be filed with IRS electronically
if 10 or more are being filed. This affects those of us engaged in trade
that made reportable payments throughout tax year 2023.

    Treasury Decision 9972
Electronic-Filing Requirements for Specified Returns and Other Documents
    Final regulation
Publication and effective date February 23, 2023 https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/FR-2023-02-23/pdf/2023-03710.pdf

There is now one threshold for all information returns affected instead
of separate thresholds per type of return. To determine whether the
threshold is exceeded, add together Form 1042-S, the Form 1094 series,
    Form 1095-B, Form 1095-C, Form 1097-BTC, Form 1098, Form 1098-C, Form
    1098-E, Form 1098-Q, Form 1098-T, the Form 1099 series, Form 3921, Form
3922, the Form 5498 series, Form 8027, and Form W-2G.

Helpfully, one must obtain a Transmitter Control Code, because gawd
forbid we shouldn't need a another number. This takes up to 45 day. If one doesn't obtain the code now, then you may be filing late.

There is a separate process for filing W-2s with Social Security Administration. Note that the instructions for paper W-2s have not been
    updated with the lowered threshold.

Note the discrepancy, as Social Security Administration will accept up
to 10 copies on paper, not under 10.

Corrected forms have their own threshold.

That threshold is a single return, if the original return was required
to be filed electronically. According to comments received before the regulation was finalized, IRS did not yet have an adequate on line
process for filing corrected information returns, but the regulations
were finalized without it. I have no idea what's been set up for
electronic filing of corrected returns in the last year.

How can any of this possibly go wrong?
