• iPhone 15 to use Qualcomm's 5G modem because Apple's isn't ready

    iPhone 15 to use Qualcomm's 5G modem because Apple's isn't ready

Apple has been working on building its own 5G modem since picking up what
was left of Intel's modem business in 2019, but it was always going to take time to get it ready for use in iPhones. That was initially expected to
happen in 2023 with the iPhone 15 launch, with Qualcomm itself having
already said that it expected to lose most of its Apple business. Now, not
    so much.

Comments made in a document that accompanied Qualcomm's earnings report on Wednesday confirmed that it now expects to provide the "vast majority" of modems for Apple's phones next year.

There had already been a suggestion that this move was in the cards,
however. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said earlier this year that he believed
Apple's own 5G modem had "failed". Apple is still expected to favor a move
to its own modems in the future, but it now won't happen in 2023.

Samsung is once again targeting Apple's lack of innovation with a
new ad titled "On the fence." https://youtu.be/HeqD7v4f8Jk

The ad features an iPhone user sitting on a fence, about to make the jump
while fellow Apple users try to convince him to stay. "'I'm going to
Samsung's side, they have folding phones and epic cameras," the person
    says.

The other iPhone users say they are "waiting for all that to come over
here," to which the switcher questions why they're waiting when
everything's already available on the "Samsung side."

The video argues that it's "time to get off the fence" and make the jump to Samsung devices, rather than "wait" for Apple to match the features and products Samsung already offers.

    https://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2022/11/03/apple-iphone-15-pro-max-ultra-qualcomm-apple-modem-fears/
New Apple Leak Confirms iPhone 15 Release Shock

Apple's much-hyped in-house 5G modem will no longer debut with the release
of the iPhone 15 range in 2023, and it signals a major setback for Apple's modem division.

The news emerged following comments from Apple modem supplier Qualcomm in
    its earnings report yesterday.

11/04 Update: I can now confirm the Qualcomm comments reported by
Bloomberg, which in turn confirm Apple's modem ambitions are delayed for at least another iPhone generation.

Despite working on the chip since 2020, Bloomberg reveals that Apple has suffered significant setbacks, which have caused the delay. In July, it reported prototypes have been "overheating over the past year."

Respected industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo went even further, saying
development of the modem "may have failed," claiming Apple may be forced to rely on Qualcomm for the foreseeable future.

Last month, Haitong International Securities analyst Jeff Pu agreed,
stating that Apple's modem may miss iPhone launches in both 2023 and 2024.

But this is the first time we have heard from an Apple partner, and
Qualcomm's announcement adds considerable weight to these pessimistic projections.

Such a delay would have seemed unthinkable when Apple bought Intel's 5G
modem business for $1BN in 2019. Intel was already shipping smartphone
modems, and Apple used them in the iPhone 11 range.

As such, it is difficult to comprehend why the project has proved so challenging.

Apple is famed for its tight component integration, so if I were to hazard
a guess, this is where I suspect problems have arisen.

Either way, Apple looks determined to cause a splash in 2023 after underwhelming sales of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus.

Must be a VERY slow news day, if this is the Apple “bad news” for today.

No one cares what modem is in a phone. Very few even know what a modem is.

You DO realize that Apple uses Samsung screens and who knows what company
makes the batteries. Etc. Why are the trolls here SO concerned about the modem? 🙄

This is like saying that “Ford is doomed because next year’s cars will still be using Michelin tires because the Ford tires are not ready”.

The point is, you continue to use parts supplier A until the product from
parts supplier B is ready to go AND in quantity. That is common sense.
If it takes Apple another 10 years, who cares?

Who indeed. Only the trolls care.

Apple to Continue to Use Qualcomm's 5G Modem for 2023 iPhone Models

Reports from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman indicate that Apple likely will not
get to use its planned in-house chips for the 2023 iPhone series.

Due to Apple and Qualcomm settling on a six-year licensing agreement, which also included a multiyear chipset supply agreement, Apple decided to start building its own 5G modem chips. To help its situation, Apple acquired
Intel's modem business in 2019. While Apple was hoping for the modems to
debut by 2023, the new report from Gurman makes that debut not likely.

However, Gurman also reports that this good news does little for Qualcomm investors. According to Wednesday's earnings report, Gurman stated that the company is dealing with a "broader slump in smartphone demand and delivered
a far weaker forecast than expected".

In terms of other iPhone news, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that the
iPhone 15 series likely will not see an 8P lens for the main camera.

Additionally, Kuo also predicts that the higher-end iPhone 15 series will
see "tactile" buttons replace the physical buttons. At the top of October, Gurman reported that the iPhone 15 will likely lose Touch ID.

The iPhone 15 might be the first with a custom Apple 5G modem

In a recent note to investors (via MacRumors), analyst Ming-Chi Kuo
revealed that he expects Apple to use its in-house Apple Silicon 5G modem
with the 2023 iPhone 15 series at the earliest.

The timeline matches up perfectly with the one provided by two Barclays analysts in March and follows several years of development, which received
a boost in 2019 when Apple acquired most of Intel's smartphone modem
    business.

At the moment it's unclear which benefits Apple's custom 5G modem will
bring to the table. But if the company's other chips are anything to go by, customers can expect both improved performance and better power efficiency.

The move will impact Qualcomm hard, claims Ming-Chi Kuo.

The American chipset manufacturer may need to enter completely new markets
to compensate for the loss of Apple's business. Qualcomm might also be
forced to compete with MediaTek for additional orders in the low-end and mid-range Android smartphone segment.

Fortunately, Apple's move towards custom chipsets won't happen overnight.

Even if the brand releases the 2023 iPhone 15 line with an in-house
chipset, previous-gen models like the iPhone 12, iPhone 13, and iPhone 14
that are still in production will continue to use Qualcomm's modems.

Nobody is shamed by this since while they are produced by other
manufacturers, they are *designed* by Apple.

The iPhone 14 Qualcomm 5G modem *designed* by Apple you say?
    How so?

Jolly Roger is wrong of course™.

The iPhone 14 uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon modem which is a standard
part that Qualcomm sells to anyone that wants to buy it, either
integrated into a Snapdragon SOC or sold as a discrete chip, though as I understand it the only phone maker that they sell the discrete part to
    is Apple.

Similarly, screens are specified by phone makers then designed and
    fabricated by various screen manufacturers.

It's the Bionic chip that is designed by Apple and then manufactured by
TSMC. The contract fab model is used by a lot of companies, there's
nothing wrong with it—few phone makers fab their own chips (Samsung is
one that does since they're vertically integrated and can produce
screens, SOCs, memory, and other devices).

that's because apple uses their own processors, not ones from qualcomm.

other phone makers don't have that option.

You mean Apple buys all that processor technology from ARM, don't you?

Nice try, no cigar - this is what I replied to:

Anyone with a 4th grade reading comprehension can clearly see in the
above quoted text that sms and JAB are trying to claim I said something
    I didn't say, because: troll. : )
