Next iphone will be launched on 7th September. https://www.macrumors.com/2022/08/24/apple-announces-september-7-iphone-14-event/

I'm disappointed there won't be a mini. I really like my wife's 12 mini, so will see what they do on the prices of the 13 or 13 mini. Or maybe see what
the next SE will be like.

it didn't sell in sufficient quantities to keep it in the lineup.

some people complained that apple didn't offer a smaller iphone, so
apple came out with the mini.

it turned out that those people weren't serious about their complaints
and instead bought the standard and max sizes.

I really like my wife's 12 mini, so
will see what they do on the prices of the 13 or 13 mini.

historically, apple keeps the previous models for a discounted price,
so it's possible that the 13 mini might still be available.

it will definitely appear on the refurb store.

    Or maybe see what
the next SE will be like.

    that's also an option.

one rumour is that the next se will be a similar size of the mini,
without the home button or bezels.

It's clear Apple's strategy is to eliminate functionality, one by one,
which Apple has clearly done inexorably so, to garner subscription revenue.

that's a stretch. how does replacing the home button with easier to use gestures, something which android copied, raise subscription revenue?

No buttons. No ports. No comms.

one of the few things that android did first:

    <https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2019/1/23/18194178/meizu-zero-p hone-trends-hole-ports-buttons>
According to Meizu, the Zero has ³no buttons, no speakers holes,
no SIM card slot, [and] no charging port.² Most of the exterior of
the device is a seamless slab of ceramic (an effect thatıs only
slightly ruined by a protruding camera bump on the back and
what appear to be microphone holes on the bottom).

Since Apple decontents phones inexorably over time, I am waiting for the
iPhone that has one connection and one only - to Apple's iCloud bank.

No buttons. No ports. No comms.
Nothing but the iCloud & only the iCloud.

You've never heard me say Apple is stupid, nospam, nor unprofitable.

So what you need to understand is there are good _reasons_ (for Apple) that Apple inexorably decontents the iPhone over time, while charging more.

*The adult question is what is in it for Apple to decontent the iPhone?*

Presumably the answer is that the inexorable decontenting of the iPhone
forces people to subscribe to services in order to get that content back.

Do you have a better answer for why Apple inexorably decontents the iPhone?

you *really* don't understand anything about face id.

face id with masks wasn't something that could simply be enabled
    whenever they felt like it.

it's an entirely new machine learning model which took roughly two
*years* to design, implement and fully test, and because it uses a new
model, the user has to re-scan their face with a mask.

note that apple added mask detection as soon as possible (within a few
months) to immediately go to a passcode, and about a year later, it
became possible to use the apple watch to unlock the iphone, which had
to be implemented in a way that didn't conflict with the ability for
the iphone to unlock the watch, as has been the case since the original
    apple watch.

Apparently a lot of people claim that they want a smaller phone but then
they see that a larger phone isn't much more expensive to they get the
larger one. Or they get an SE instead of a Mini.

My wife wanted a small iPhone and she got the SE2020 instead of the 12
Mini, as did many of her colleagues, even though the company would have
let them get the 12 Mini (or 12). The big reason for choosing the SE was
that this was during the height of the pandemic and FaceID would have
been a huge issue given the health care setting. If they had enabled
FaceID with masks a year earlier then she might have chosen the 12 Mini.

There are no good small Android flagship phones anymore that are
supported by all the U.S. carriers. The last one was the Samsung S10e.
The 5.9" Zenfone 8 will work on AT&T and T-Mobile though.

If that proves correct and the relative price stays where it is the live
for the super-expensive iPhones becomes very difficult.

Currently I consider handing down my 11 to our youngest daughter and buy
the smallest 14 (but only if it is not bigger). But a beefed up SE would
be a very attractive choice. Especially sizewise.

It's not a cost issue, but size. I struggle to reach buttons when using my
XR one handed. As a left-hander often the buttons I need are on the wrong
    side.

However, I'm now off the age where my eyes are changing so that might
    dictate the size... :(
