    Hello,

Is it me or is it hard to get good clear focus of a bug close up in mid
air? Like a spider on its web. iPhone 12 mini keeps focusing on the
background and not the spider up close when I am trying to take a
    pcture!

Thank you for reading and hopefully answering. :)

There is advice on how to do this all over the web.

Have you tried taking the picture in portrait mode? That should put the focus on the subject and blur the background.

Is that the display orientation (didn't matter which way I held my
iPhone) or something else I missed?

It is not the display orientation. When you open the camera on your phone
there should be some options near the bottom, above the button to take the picture. On my phone it has time-lapse, slo-mo, cinematic, video, photo, portrait, and panorama. On your IPhone 12, you may not have all of those,
but I am guessing you do have portrait. Slide to that option and that
should allow you to focus on the subject with some background blur.
