an airtag, for example, lasts ~18 months on a coin battery. other

I thought AirTags' batteries last a year, not 1.5 years.

1 yr is a conservative estimate from Apple.

I replaced 2 after ~1.5 years and have 2 going on 2 years come May.

I guess it depends on how often they get pinged.

Is there a way to see its history pings?

    Not that I'm aware.

If it's in an area with a lot of Apple device traffic, there will be
    more pings.

    I'd give the Apple 1 yr a 95% confidence.

IAC - batteries are cheap and you can change it in about 3 minutes
(including getting the battery out of the blister pack). Make sure the
old battery goes for battery recycling.

The AirTag we have in the car does this when my wife is in the car. I
hope one day Apple will add the ability to share AirTags, but this is a
very minor inconvenience, and I'm not trying to track anyone without
their knowledge anyway, so it's no big deal if it beeps occasionally.

It works like that, here. No-one in the family gets alerted by my keys
    AirTag.

One time my daughter borrowed my keys, her boyfriend's phone got alerted.
    Not hers.

If you are reasonably close to your AirTag then there is no reason for a
family device nearby to alert them.

AirTags are linked to a specific account. They are not filtered out by
family plans except as described here:

    https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT212227

<<It's possible that the AirTag or Find My network accessory might be
attached to an item you're borrowing, or you might get this alert if
you’re borrowing someone else’s AirPods. If you're borrowing an AirTag
or another item compatible with the Find My network from a member of
your Family Sharing group, you can turn off alerts for that item for one
    day, or indefinitely.>>

No it doesn't. Family Sharing has never worked with AirTags:

    <https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252690007?answerId=255068097022#255068097022>

    It would be nice though.

No-one in the family gets alerted by my keys AirTag.

    From Apple's website:
    <https://www.apple.com/airtag/>
    ---
AirTag is designed to discourage unwanted tracking. If someone else’s
AirTag finds its way into your stuff, your iPhone will notice it’s
traveling with you and send you an alert. After a while, if you still
haven’t found it, the AirTag will start playing a sound to let you know it’s there.

Of course, if you happen to be with a friend who has an AirTag, or on a
train with a whole bunch of people with AirTag, don’t worry. These
alerts are triggered only when an AirTag is separated from its owner.
    ---

It's possible you haven't left your keys alone with your family members,
as the alert only sounds when you are not near your own AirTag.

One time my daughter borrowed my keys, her boyfriend's phone got alerted.
    Not hers.

It's possible she paused tracking notifications for your AirTag - see
    the bottom of this screenshot:
