there is no need for a sim provider (either type) to offer voip and
sms. their role is solely to provide connectivity.

voip and messaging apps will work with any provider as well as with
public wifi. private wifi will also work but one will obviously need to
obtain access to it. and just to be complete, one could use a wired
    ethernet adapter.

Someone on Reddit, visiting the U.S., was looking for an eSIM for an
iPad that includes calling and texting capability (not just a data-only eSIM).

sounds like another fabricated 'story' to stage yet another revision to
    the 'document'.

post a link to the reddit thread so we can see exactly what the
question was and what suggestions were given. assuming there is such a
    thread.

TextNow would work for him, with a physical SIM, but they don't have
    eSIM support.

then it won't work for him.

why even mention it if it doesn't fit his needs?

That MVNO (Unreal Mobile) no longer offers this service, I bought
some of their SIM cards with three months of 5GB/month data for pretty
cheap. It was a bit of a pain to set up because they only have an iPhone
    app, not an iPad app,

    what pain??

iphone apps work on ipads in compatibility mode, either at 1x (actual
    size) or 2x (full screen).

but, surprisingly, it was easy to install an
    iPhone-only app,

not surprisingly, installing it is the same as an ipad app.

the only surprise is how soon your story starts to fall apart.

that doesn't show up in the App store for iPad, onto
    the iPad.

that only happens if an iphone app requires hardware not available on a particular iapd, which means it *won't* *work* if someone was able to
download it. android does this too, but you conveniently neglect to
    mention that..

however, voip apps do not fall into that category, so your story fails
    even further.

On many LTE Android tablets they use a phone chipset and you can have a native dialer and SMS capability, essentially an Android phone with a
    very large screen.

exactly why they don't sell well. they're nothing more than a 'big
    phone'.

ipads take full advantage of the larger screen, with features that are unavailable on android tablets, such as stage manager, sidecar and
universal control and a wealth of ui elements that only make sense on a
large screen (e.g., splitview), along with a *huge* selection of
ipad-native apps to take full advantage of it.

using a tablet as a phone is silly. who wants to hold up an 11" (or
larger) device to their head? even the 8" ipad mini is too big to be
    used as a phone.

Just as an additional purposefully helpful datapoint, while I do NOT have
an eSIM on my older iPads, they have the free-for-life 200MB T-Mobile SIM
cards which allow me to make and receive POTS calls over Google Voice for
    free.

It's a speakerphone, of course, at least the way that I use it myself.

But I suspect someone who knows what they're doing (i.e., I never tried
it), could use it with a bluetooth earbud and it would be like a normal
    phone.

Hence, the answer to _that_ question would be 'why not' have an extra
    phone, for free?

He has a phone with a foreign SIM and a foreign number. He wanted a U.S.
number for use in the U.S.. It's still possible on an iPad, with a
TextNow physical SIM, but apparently there are no eSIMs with that
    capability.

In the U.S., there was a "free" mobile service called FreedomPop which
offered a small amount of free VOIP-based service with the hope that
users would end up signing up for a paid plan, though the paid plans
    were definitely no bargain.

This is what the Unreal Mobile app looks like on my iPad Pro (next to an
image of the SIM cards that were being closed out by Best Buy for
    $18.99): <https://i.imgur.com/PMis8jr.png>. Best Buy link is <https://www.bestbuy.com/site/reviews/unreal-mobile-5gb-month-3-month-4g-lte-3-in-1-sim-kit/6300265>
    but these are long gone.

That was a good price, at the time, in the U.S., $6.33 per month for 5GB
of data per month on AT&T, and I bought two of them to use in my MiFi
Hotspot. I didn't even realize that the voice and text were VOIP based,
like the old FreedomPop (and in fact both FreedomPop and Unreal Mobile
are now owned by Red Pocket. The $20 per month regular price for 5GB is
no deal though so when the last of these expire in June that will be it,
    but Google Voice will suffice.

For the person on Reddit, this is essentially what they want, but with
an eSIM, not a physical SIM. I don’t think there is such a thing. He
can’t use a plan that requires cellular phone capabilities because those aren’t included on cellular iPads. He bought a data-only eSIM not
realizing that it was data only.

On some of my “surplus” phones, I have stuck in the now discontinued T-Mobile/FreedomPop SIM cards
    <https://www.walmart.com/ip/seort/680827893> which provide 300 minutes,
1000 texts, and 100MB of data per month at no cost.

hope?? they forced paid plans upon users, who had to continuously take
steps to remain free, at least until the next billing cycle. not that
it mattered since the service was barely usable.

of course there is, which you even admit exists below.

    He
cant use a plan that requires cellular phone capabilities because those arent included on cellular iPads.

actually, he can, but it would be a waste of money.

he also has a phone which would benefit from a plan that has 'cellular
    phone capabilities'.

He bought a data-only eSIM not
realizing that it was data only.

exactly what's needed for an ipad.

    Just stop it.
If you can _help_ Steve, then help him.

Do you have even one purposefully helpful bone in your entire body nospam?
If you do, help the thread technically - instead of acting like a child.

But don't call me a liar.

    don't lie and i won't.

    FACT:
    a. I said I never even tried it.
    b. I said someone with more experience could help more than I can.

YOU turned _that_ help for Steve into your personal pissing contest.

Do you see the part about me not having any experience with bluetooth?

do you see the part you deliberately snipped, where experience with
bluetooth would be required to make the claim you did?

    here it is again:
Why do you think the iPad VOIP can't be used with BT earbuds

Idiot. It's a rhetorical question. You utter moron.

you lied. and this ain't the first time either.

There is something wrong with you nospam, as you have no helpful intent.
All you want to do is turn every thread into your own pissing contest.
