• FCC taking a stand against spam texting

Phone companies must block text messages coming from shady sources

Under new regulations for telecom firms, the Federal Communications
Commission is taking action against spammy text messages in response
to an increase in consumer complaints in recent years related to
    unsolicited robotexts.

According to the new regulations, phone companies must block text
messages coming from shady sources, including numbers that seem to be
"invalid, unallocated, or underused." FCC claims that carriers will
also be required to block text messages from phone numbers that
declare they never text or that have been designated by the government
    as non-texting numbers.

This is spectacular news. The number of fake calls and texts I get per
day now is growing fast. God help you if you post on Craigslist these
days - people respond expressing interest and claiming to be in your
area. If you give address or phone number it appears to immediately
get harvested and an hour or so later you're getting texts and spam
    calls. It's infuriating.

I use ringtones for my calling circle, and either mute default
ringtone, or give it a low noise ringtone.

I use three different cell numbers, but one of them is on Google
Voice. GV number is never directly answered, so the caller must leave
a VM. So when at GV's site, I delete texts/etc there.

Craigslist has not been an issue for me, but I have not used it in a
year or two. I use an "anonymous" gmail account to conduct business
    there.

I have had my cell number since 2005, and I can say that I get maybe one
or two spam calls per month, tops. My secret is never giving it out,
ever, unless I know you in person.

Craigslist, companies, or whatever else get my land line. I might be
the first owner of my cell number, but the land line has been through
plenty of people, and it's been published in the phone book for years.
I'd say I get an average of 2 spam calls per day on the home phone.
