• air fryer boom

Nestle, Tyson and other food giants bet on air fryer boom to grow
    sales

Nestle, Kellogg, Tyson Foods and Gorton' Seafood are among the food
companies leaning into the air fryer boom to appeal to consumers.

As inflation cools and retailers put pressure on suppliers to stop
raising prices, food companies have had to look for growth elsewhere.

Nearly 60% of U.S. households own an air fryer, according to Nestle'
    Adam Graves.
    ...
    ...
In 2022, U.S. consumers spent nearly $1 billion buying air fryers, up
51% from 2019, according to market research firm The NPD Group. Sales
of the cooking appliance have been soaring since 2017, and they
received an extra boost during the early days of the pandemic as
    people cooked more at home.

And now with more workers returning to the office and spending less
time in the kitchen, consumers are increasingly turning to the
portable convection ovens. Joe Derochowski, home industry advisor at
the NPD Group, said the main draw is the ease and speed of using the
appliance, plus achieving a crispy texture without deep-frying. And
food manufacturers want to capitalize on the trend.

Man, what a stupid appliance. When I first saw one, I thought 'nope.'
Nothing has changed my mind since. That said, Americans sure seem to
have bought a lot of them.

I thought for sure the boom was over. Remember when everyone was buying voice-activated digital assistants and the press was (re)assuring us
they're the coolest thing ever? And now everyone hates them and the
press is loudly decrying them as useless/annoying? Kind of thought air
fryers would suffer the same cycle.

Wondering how many watts they draw - has to be a frikkin lot. (Not
wondering hard enough to actually go look it up, mind you).

It can save energy when compared to an electric stove. When AC is
running, especially so. During cooler months, just some electric
    heating.

For a couple or a single....ideal for smaller servings. ---------------------------------------

What is an air fryer anyway?

Let's get this out of the way: Air-frying is a rebrand of the stodgy
old term "convection." It's essentially the same thing, but "air
frying" just sounds so much lighter, doesn't it? An air fryer is a
mini countertop convection oven, which means it uses a fan to help
circulate hot air around your food so that it cooks more evenly and
efficiently than in a normal oven. It preheats in minutes and makes
weeknight cooking convenient, mostly hands-off, and so, so crispy.

They're being bought in the UK as a means of saving energy (electricity
costs have gone up about three times recently). When the BBC tested them,
they took half as much energy to cook baked potatoes and chicken legs than a traditional oven.

I agree; I know a lot of people head-over-heels with these things, but I
don't see how it would improve my day-to-day life. It might just be a
fad, or it might become the next microwave oven... I don't know.

Either way, I'm one of the 10 per cent of Americans with *no* microwave
oven in my house. Apparently, I'm also one of the 40 per cent with no
"air fryer"... which is, of course, just a convection oven with some oil
added in. There is no such thing as "frying with air". That moniker is annoying.

Some are the same as an electric oven, some smaller units are under.
Even the high wattage ones, they claim to save money because they have a
much smaller space to heat than the electric oven, plus they cook
faster. I use a natural gas oven, and NG is cheaper here... plus, in
the winter, heat from the NG oven goes right into the house.

So it's just an oddly shaped convection oven. The name is all a
    marketing ploy ;)
