It's a pretty great photo. You can see the piles of snow, but you can
also see what looks like bright sun melting the sidewalks clear.

Either way, they put everyone since to shame... at least, post 1950's.
I'm embarrassed for other people today, with how they dress in public.

I dress up more, especially if it's cold out. I walked several blocks
down the hill to my daughter's school Christmas play held at a church
down town, about a week ago (rather than drive on slick roads).

Me, wearing a sport coat, outer suit coat, tie, and a fedora; nice
slacks and shoes, etc... people look at you like you're a space alien if
you go out wearing that, today. Someone even asked me if I am a
    detective... LOL.

People had to shop for clothing...here it is...that's all!

    1900-1909

    OVERVIEW

While technology progressed in the first decade of the twentieth
century, fashion largely remained the same. Subtle changes in
silhouette occurred in womenswear until the tubular shape of the 1910s
was beginning to emerge by the end of the decade. Lace and other
embellishments were key. Menswear continued to see the suit as the
primary style, though the tuxedo became increasingly acceptable as
formal wear in the evening. Children continued to be dressed like
mini-adults and styles such has the sailor suit continued to be
    popular options.

    Farmers' Clothing

It can be difficult to determine a date based on the clothing of
farmers in an historic image. Their clothing was functional, not
fashionable, and changed little over the years. However, a few small
details can be observed in the evolution of the farmer's attire that
can give a relatively rough date. Below are several representative
images of farmers from the mid-19th century through the mid-20th
    century.

During the 19th century, sack coats (worn by the man on the left),
button down shirts, and soft, felt hats, usually wide-brimmed, were
frequently worn. The men in the image below, which dates from the
1860s, wear overalls, but they were not as commonly worn until around
    the 1890s.

Very cool website. Fashion Institute of NY, I see. Very cool.

Nobody's going to look back on the fashion of this decade and feel
    anything but remorse, ha ha.

Historically, I believe "fashion" was common among the elites.

Most folks didn't have enough closet space for the "gee whiz" fashion.

I'm reminded too of that old picture - B&W, maybe depression-era
midwest? - of a young boy receiving his first pair of shoes. He's
overjoyed, clearly has never had shoes in his life. It's a really
touching photo. It sure is strange living in an era of excess -
imagine how "fast fashion" would look to the generation that lived
    through starvation and despair.

My grandfather lived through the great depression, and that really
changes a person. I admire how he fixed things himself, and saved a
number of things to re-use. I strive to do the same myself.

Honestly, I hate the excess of the world that we live in today.
Everything seems to be in excess.
