    | mathematics field (STEM), post completion of their studies, can gain
    | work experience for up to three years under the Optional Practical
    | Training Program (OPT). In several cases, the current employer where
    | they are undergoing such training sponsors them for an H-1B visa,
    | allotment of which is based on being selected in the lottery.
    | According to the latest available Open Doors Report, for the year
    | 2019-20, nearly 18 per cent of the total contingent of international
    | students (or 1.93 lakh) were from India. About 81,173 were engaged
    | in the OPT program.
