• COVID-19: see PBS NOVA on Bat Superpowers!

    From Jim@21:1/5 to All on Thu Sep 16 14:37:23 2021
    Watched it last night on TV. The bat evolved to prevent inflammation from extreme exercise (flight requirements). This changed its immune system to tolerate viral infections but have high antibodies 24/7 to keep infections in check. So the bat is a reservoir for a large number of viruses that could
    jump species to cause infection.

    The bat also has extreme longevity. Much of the Nova program investigates
    this for use in future medicines. But it may be immune system related too.

    The take-away for COVID-19 is booster shots will keep our immune systems
    on high alert like the bat immune system. This will keep antibodies max'ed
    out like the bat immune system.

    See:

    So booster shots are in our future to contain COVID.

    T1 4/86, no complications, watching for IGF-I positive feedback loop.
    Nocturnal hypoglycemic seizures ended when stopped using Humalog (Lispro). Normal Dawn Phenomenon returned ~1 year later.

    2 minutes in, an individual says "Bats teach us lesson, not to
    suffer autoimmune disease, diabetes, arthritis."

    Insulitis Islit (the specific type of Insulinitis caused by an auto-
    immune attack on pancreatic beta cells, the specific type which
    is 1 of the 15 specific types of Islit, the 1 that the overwhelming
    majority of those with Islit have) is 1 of over 100 autoimmune
    diseases that is referred to at the following article: https://pathology.jhu.edu/autoimmune/classification/

    Diabetes is actually 7 Disparate High Glucose Conditions with
    over 80 specific types described in the following article: https://prohuman.net/diabetesbubblediabetesbubbleburst.htm

    Arthritis per the following article ... https://www.cdc.gov/arthritis/basics/types.html
    ... means inflammation or swelling of one or more joints, des-
    cribing more than 100 conditions that affect the joints, tissues
    around the joint, and other connective tissues. Specific symp-
    toms vary depending on the type of arthritis, but usually include
    joint pain and stiffness.

    ~~~
    4 minutes in, an individual says "Many experts believe that the
    coronavirus that tore through the world's population in 2020
    came from a bat."
    ~~~

    Well into the video, an individual says "In COVID-19 infections,
    & many age-related chronic diseases, such as Alzheimer’s or
    stroke, coronary artery disease, diabetes, in all these diseases,
    inflammation is over-activated. That causes a lot of problems."

    The difference in how inflammation impacts & causes the Dis-
    parate High Glucose Conditions Cellosis (new superior clarifying
    name for type 2 diabetes) & Insulitis Islit (the autoimmune attack
    on pancreatic beta cells) are discussed in the following article: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6523054/

    ~~~
    At the end of the video, individuals say "Scientists think that the
    shortening of telomeres over time is one of the key triggers of
    cell death, influencing the aging process and the lifespan of all
    mammalian species. So what’s the deal with bats?"
    ... "What we found was extraordinary. In the longest-lived genera
    of the bats, the myotis bats, their telomeres do not shorten with
    age. And this was very unique. We didn’t really see this in any
    other mammal. Telomeres shorten in us, in badgers, in sea lions.
    So, this was extraordinary."
    "We found two or three genes that we think are evolving in a dif-
    ferent way in bats, that we think are the genes that allow this thing
    called “alternative telomere lengthening” happen in bats. So, bats
    are able to use a different mechanism to maintain their telomeres
    with age."
    "Are these genes the key to the bats’ long and healthy lives? And
    could they one day protect against the effects of aging in humans,
    as well?"
    "Scientists aren’t about to turn this discovery into an elixir of youth,
    but researchers ... are optimistic for the future. Their adventure with
    bats has just begun."
    "Echolocation that allows them to see in total darkness; flight speed
    that is unrivalled by any other animal (up to 100 miles per hour); they
    are impervious to most viruses; insensitive to ageing; and the mas-
    ters of a marvelously controlled immune system ..."
    "Looking at bats, ... we will be able to find ways to improve human existence."
    "The product of millions of years of adaptation, bats are now emer-
    ging from the shadows as extraordinary creatures that could poten-
    tially light a path for longer and healthier human lives."
