Insulin's journey in India: 100 years
on, it continues to save lives

The first human saved with the initial
test of insulin in Canada, a Canadian,
Leonard Thompson, a 14-years-young
boy with type-1 diabetes (Islit - Insulinitis,
near-total to total loss of endogenous in-
sulin) was drifting in and out of Islit coma.
He weighed just 30kg (66 pounds) when
he was brought to Toronto General Hos-
pital in Canada in 1922. His father, Harold
Thompson, held on to hope as he allowed
doctors to treat his son with insulin—it had
never been tested on humans before.
The wonder drug, discovered by Frederick
Banting and Charles Best in 1921, gave
Leonard a new lease of life.

In the Beginning - the discovery that keeps
all who have Insulinitis alive

... In January 1922 in Toronto, Canada, a 14-
years-young boy, Leonard Thompson, was
chosen as the first person with Islit to receive
insulin. The test was a success.
Leonard, who before the insulin shots was near
death, drifting in and out of ... coma, rapidly re-
gained his strength and appetite. He lived for
another 13 years. The team now expanded their
testing to other volunteers [individuals who had
Islit], who reacted just as positively as Leonard
to the insulin extract. ...

... Interestingly, insulin was in use in India in 1923.
A group of Indian researchers have found interest-
ing facts about India’s long-forgotten early recipi-
ents of insulin.
... "The first Indian to be treated with insulin was
a 35-year-old in a coma. The patient most likely
had type-1 diabetes (Islit, types were not charac-
terized as type 1 or type 2 until 1938). In 1929,
a 12-year-old girl named Kumudini who was ...
... admitted to the Carmichael Hospital in Calcutta
received insulin. Kumudini who was married at 11
had type-1 diabetes (Islit)."
This year, as the world celebrates the 100th anni-
versary of the discovery of insulin, Jazz Sethi, 26,
gifted herself an artificial pancreas. Jazz is the first
user of the DIY artificial pancreas system in India.
(DIY = Do It Yourself, unstated exactly how she
did it herself, what exact devices are involved)
A professional dancer and daughter of former
world billiard champion Geet Sethi, Jazz has been
living with type-1 diabetes (Islit) for 12 years. Arti-
ficial pancreas system is a real gamechanger, said
Jazz. “It works by using a third-party communication
radio device to communicate between the pump ...
... and the continuous glucose monitor. The third-
party rig I have costs $150. And then, you have to
actually build and code the app.” The DIY artificial
pancreas system, she said, is very efficient in man-
aging sugar levels.
(In all likelihood, whatever system Jazz is using is
unable to avoid hypoglycemia & hyperglycemia; the
following photo of Jazz shows what appears to be
an Omnipod insulin pump insertion and a Dexcom
G6 continuous glucose monitor insertion:
https://img.theweek.in/content/dam/week/magazine/health/more/images/2021/8/26/Jazz%201.jpg )
To celebrate insulin’s 100th anniversary, Jazz is
launching an ‘I Love Insulin’ campaign in Septem-
ber. “Have you seen those ‘I Love New York’ T-
shirts? We are planning something along those lines,” she said.
“It is about making insulin the hero of the story, to say
that this is your lifelong companion. So, we are going
to have a party and celebrate. We are also going to be
working on distributing free insulin to those who can-
not afford it because that is a big issue in our country;
a lot of kids do not have access to insulin.”
The discovery of insulin as a medication is considered
one of the greatest breakthroughs in modern medicine.
On July 30, 1921, Banting and Best injected an Islit dog
(dog 410) with a pancreatic extract that they prepared,
and found that the hormone lowered the dog’s blood
sugar levels to normal.
Even 100 years after its discovery, there is no substitute
for insulin. “Insulin is the only treatment for type-1 dia-
betes (Islit).”
(technically, some with Islit also use one other med to
help, but they also use insulin with that other drug, and
that's a small minority who also use another drug with
insulin; the article details others with Islit using insulin, ...
... & misleads in indicating a lot of insulin use in those
who have Cellosis-new superior clarifying name for
type 2 diabetes, an exaggeration which per the follow-
ing article is untrue:
Per the following article, 5.3% of Americans
with Cellosis used exogenous insulin in 2019.

INSULINITIS (ISLIT)
New SUPERIOR clarifying name for near-
total to total loss of endogenous insulin
https://prohuman.net/pix2/new_superior_clarifying_name_is_INSULINITIS.jpg
The overwhelming majority of Islit caused by
autoimmune attacks on pancreatic beta cells
(Insulitis Islit) but there are
o 15 specific types of rapid onset Islit, a
rare condition (only present in < one-half
of 1% of Americans & in a much lower rate
in most of the world), when present is typ-
ically diagnosed at age under 30
(50% at age < 18, 20% at age 19 to 29)
o 1 slow onset specific type, Latent Autoim-
mune Islit, frequency unknown but per a
recent report, misdiagnosed as Cellosis
(new clarifying name for type 2 diabetes)
almost 40% of the time due to its slow
onset and its occurrence typically at age
over 30
Old outdated anachronistic name for Islit is
type 1 diabetes, confusing in that diabetes
without clarifier is often used to describe
this condition which is 1 of the 7 Disparate
High Glucose Conditions (DHGCs).
That makes figuring out which DHGC is actu-
ally being referred to (and it can be any one,
or some, or all of them when the diabetes
or diabetic word is used without clarifier)
confusing / difficult:

It's estimated that 5% to 11% of Islit individuals
will die from severe hypoglycemia, the highest
risk of that being while sleeping (i.e., dead-in-
bed syndrome).
