Is Amway (American Way) a scam? I was at a bookstore last week, and
someone named Bernard (who I am convinced is a recruiter for his
company) started a conversation with me. He told me about a business,
and asked if we could meet. We met at a conference in a hotel, which
included some speakers talking about business. I did not have to
    pay... show more

Amway is a multi-level marketing scheme
    aka
    pyramid scheme
(some refer to as pyramid scam)
    http://delilahann.hubpages.com/hub/Amway...

Companies say sellers can make six-figure salaries; critics call
multilevel marketing firms a scam. Pyramid schemers/scammers make me
nervous. The only people who get rich from pyramid schemes are the
ones who start it. Everyone else get's hosed. I break-out into hives
when I'm around high-pressure sales. Getting cornered by an Amway
salesman ..yeesh.. I feel sorry for you. That must have been awful.

There are many pyramid schemes for many different products and
services. To be completely fair.. it isn't that there's something
phony about the Amway products themselves. There isn't anything wrong
with Herbalife supplements, or the "MonaVie Juice: The $45 Per Bottle
    Pyramid Scheme".

I used to take Herbalife supplements and I thought they were great..
still do but they're a little pricey and no better/no worse than any
other vitamin or supplement. Same with 'MonaVie'. (basically extremely high-priced pomegranate juice that's been packaged in a wine bottle)..
it's not that it isn't beneficial to ones health.. but the price and
the hype is insane! (and inferring that it can cure cancer is more
    than pushing it).

There's nothing wrong with the "Pre-paid Legal Services" plan. AVON is multi-level/pyramid and there's nothing wrong with AVON's products.
Tupperware are decent food storage containers (people used to have
Tupperware parties = pyramid) but it's sold in retail stores as well.
MaryKay cosmetics weren't/aren't necessarily sub-par products.

Pyramid schemes pray on (sometimes) desperate people who're looking
for get-rich-quick schemes. A fast-talking salesman claims his
brother-in-law is a neurosurgeon who gave up his practice because he
was bringing-in more money selling Amway.. and in this economy
    sometimes people take the bait.

The premise that one will make tens of thousands (even millions)
without having to do much (because they have many levels of salesmen
under them, and they're receiving a % of all of their sales) sounds
just about right to some people. The lavish events (typically held in
an airport Marriott ballroom or similar) are designed to further
entice newbies into the scheme. They see people who appear to be
extremely well-off and well-heeled, accepting their plaque that states
they've made X amount of dollars. MaryKay cosmetics used to gift their top-sellers with a custom PINK Cadillac. MonaVie claims to hand over a
leather briefcase with 1MILLION in cash. It's cringe and shudder-
worthy. (to me anyway.. to a lot of people).

It sounds as if you have a good head on your shoulders and are
researching this in the proper manner. Asking questions and reading
about the company is for the best. Ultimately, it's up to you if you
want to get involved in multi-level marketing. It's just not for me.

Do yourself a favor and get out as soon as possible! Amway is a scam,
plain and simple. The products they have you sell are not better than
what you can buy at the store and are overly priced. The training is
garbage, ultimately the goal is to try to convince your friends to
either buy from you or become a member of Amway. When your immediate
"network" gets tired of you, then you're encouraged to talk to the
friends of the people you know, from there, strangers.

    Dude
    Amway is a scam.

Its like a pyramid scheme but only legal.

Companies like Amway make 70 - 80% of their entire revenue by selling
their starter kits. They sell the kit for $500. They don't make much
money from the agents or sales people who have to convince other
    people to buy the goods.

Amway is the first pyramid firm in the US.

Amway signed a consent order with the fed gov to have its HQ leave
    the US for
violating many laws......iT has agents world wide because they have a
    great con going on nad
those who do not know biz find it appealing --ya mean all I need to
do is go to people I already
know and my family and have parties and show them my stuff? That's
    all?

That is not an ALL--Amway does not sell from stores since they would
    not be able to
sell anything; their goods are way over prices and their pitch is
    "sell to your friends
an family who would not feel it fair to say no to you." That is not
    selling, that is conning
and trading on family and friends loyalty.

In 18 nations, ALL MLM is illegal and promoters are jailed.

I once challenged Amway; you sell it your way, I will sell it my way
    ][i was a national
champion i selling--tested by a university] and the local top Amway
    man said NO--that
would be unfair to our younger reps. BS of course.

At hotels around the state in AZ, the reps do not inform the hotel
    they are there to
have a company meeting; nothing is said about MLM recruiting. When
    the hotels
discover the true purpose, the hotels throw them out.

NOTHING SOLD via MLM is reasonable, fair, cost reasonable or ethical
    or moral.
    NOTHING...........

It is designed by hustler to hustle people--esp by requiring the reps
    to buy a kit.
The law says, when the main purpose of a firm is to sell kits to
    reps, that is committing
    a felony--check it out.

Stay away from Amway and all MLM
[lastly, I dated a lady from Amway 28 yrs ago-- a fifth level rep.
She was sold on the firm
and said it was all legit. I said, Let me audit your operations and
    books

the Company reneged on everything it sold her and told her
she filed BK the following mo.

if you want to hurt everyone you talk to about this, keep at it. IF
    you want to keep family
members in your good graces........stay out of it.
