I really can't believe that story is still circulating, but a few times in recent years there have been local stories about someone collecting them.

And nobody challenges it. Well I think I think I wrote to one paper. The collector says "it takes up less space than cans", but you get five cents
for cans but a miniscule amount for the tab. YOu can return cans at any
time, let the nickels accummulate rather than the cans, but if you collect
only the tabs, you're doomed to piling up those tabs since they bring in
so little there's no sense going unless you have an awful lot. And still
you won't make as much as taking the cans.

For the record, there is no magic place that gives some magic amount for
pull tabs. You have to cash them in as scrap metal, which means
accumulating enough to make the trip worth it, and going to where they
take scrap metal, which I think is generally in more indsutrial areas.
And if you don't take the cans, you throw away most of the five cents you
    could get for the can.

    Michael

Of course, if your locale doesn't have a deposit on cans, you can't get
five cents for them as scrap, just by weight.
