A few years ago, I was looking for a job and a friend invited me to an interview with her boss who works for Amway. The interview was taken
inside a coffee shop. Inside the coffee shop there were 3 – 4
teenagers seated at each table with a laptop. They all worked for him.
I entered the shop and her boss greeted me. He was very skilled at
socializing.
To get you interested, the first thing he did before anything else was
to ascertain what your goal was. In my case it was money. He spoke of
rich people he knew, and how he was rich himself and how you could
become like him by listening to exactly what he says. He then went on
to say that you need to put in work and effort and a little bit of
money. He then takes out the supposed business model A.K.A. the
pyramid scheme and goes on to explain how you coerce other people into
buying the Amway products through a website he provides.
the most important thing to note from all this is that he avoids all
your questions by answering with things unrelated. for e.g. if I ask
him “what If I do not want to sell out my friends and family and bring
others into this scheme?” He would answer by saying “you see, this
business model has both its up and downs. To make a lot of money, you
need to remember to put in a lot of effort. The richest men….” He
would then drone on until you forget what you were even asking.
The scheme. you pay for the website and training. You sell overpriced
products and recruit other gullible people to work for you. The more
people that work for you, the more money you make. The people that you
recruit pay you for training and a free easily made website and a % of
their sales go to you, which goes to the boss that introduced you.
Which is why its called a pyramid. The person at the bottom has to
recruit others to make money. The person at the top makes the most
money.
All the teenagers with laptops in front of them in the coffee shop
were his minions who fell for his soliciting. They paid the fee for
the website and for the training, and now they were on their way to
soliciting others to do the same thing. And the worst thing is that
they believe that what they are doing is a real job.
Amway is a multi level marketing business (MLM), which is the nicer
way of saying pyramid scheme. the drop-shipping they do and their
overpriced items do not add value in any way to the world.
