I like Marcus Aurelius for his stoical stance regarding a personal philosophy of moderation. Evidently, he had great advantages of wealth and family history that gave him Roman dictatorship in the 3rd century. But he was able to manage defense of Rome
against the barbarians, yet tried--and failed--in attempts at peaceful relations.
So much for moderation in all things, it seems, and today we are again being tested by totalitarian regimes we try to placate by allowing them free trade and even ownership of U.S. businesses, while government sanctuary of invading migrants allows them
freedoms and rights denied by home countries.
