Plumbers will thank you for not using chemicals, and at least letting them know before they start disconnecting lines.

You can buy a cheep plastic rod that bends as you push it down, has hooks on to snare blockage. I would go with the use of Blue Dawn and boiling water as the best frugal-living way to go.

Unfortunately if it gets snagged on something sturdy it can break --
then you have a second problem to deal with. I was lucky, it broke
    within reach.

The problem with boiling water is that you might not have enough of it
to get to the clog, which might not be something meltable.

I like the water-weenie-like rubber thing that you attach to the garden
hose and shove into the pipe. Needs two people -- one to turn on the
water and one to observe the effect. The bad part here is if the clog
is beyond the standpipe you create a nice fountain. Best, but messiest,
is the snake you attach to a 1/4" drill. Usually an orange housing.
The problem there, of course, is that some pipe joins are at right
angles and you have no control over the direction the snake takes.

There's a reason plumbers cost a lot. Reference is made to the Gary
Larson cartoon -- Cave-owners looking at cave-plumber looking at a hole
in the ground. Caption: "Ooooo, this not be cheap..."
