S.O.S.: Non-responding Word Document

Hi, folks. I do freelance editing work file on a website called Upwork. Clients send me documents through the message mailbox. A couple of weeks ago someone sent me a term paper with ".docx" as the file extension, but when I downloaded it, the "Save As"
box said "Office Open XML word processing document." There was also a message saying the file had a "blocked file extension." But since the file extension was .docx I thought it was okay so I downloaded it.
The editing went fine until yesterday. Then suddenly, each time I opened the document, it only downloaded to page 9. The document has 161 pages. When I tried to scroll down past page 9, the color wheel appeared and rotated for nearly an hour. I finally
gave up and had to "force quit." For the past two days I've been trying to get it to work, to no avail.
Can someone tell me what may have happened, and what I can do about it? Thanks.
