How can I format numbering to go X, Y, Z, AA, AB, AC, ... AZ, BA, BB,
BC, etc? Word's default numbering format AA, BB, CC, goes into three
digits after ZZ. We'd like to avoid the three digits in long lists.
Are there and ways around the default? Any ideas for us? Thanks in
advance for your help.

They way that I have done this is:
1. Right click on AA and select, "Restart at A".
2. Double click on A so that all the numbering values in the new list starting at the second A are highlighted.
3. Click the dropdown arrow next to the numbering icon in the Home ribbon.
4. Select "Define New Number Format"
5. In the input box below "Number format:" click to the left of the letter that is auto-populated in the box and type "A".
6. Click ok.
This process technically creates a new list A though Z where there is just an "A" attached to the front of each letter. If you get to values than need to start with B and so one, you would have to do he same process as above, but with the new letter.
