    Greetings Group.
I'm re-installing ME on an old laptop for some legacy software.
And was wondering if there any current anti-virus programs that will
    still work on ME..

I've answered you in the past when you've asked this same question.

And my answer is still the same.

You don't need to be running any sort of anti-virus software for windows
9x/me. You haven't needed that for at least the past 10 years.

There are no browser exploits that are in use today (and quite frankly
there may never have been any) that can trip up a 9x/me system and cause
it to run exploit code or download secondary viral payload.

And I'd be very surprised if there was even any exploit code sent along
as an email attachment that you'd be fool enough to execute that would
run as intended on a 9x/me system today.

    Have I explained myself?

    Got any more questions?

And by the way, you'd be better off running win-9x with kernelEx and
with some other mods (like the extended ram hack) than you would be
running that abortion known as Windows Millenium.

Wow, you really are angry about ME! ;-)

What do you know about networking W98se running on MVPC-2007 on Windows 7 to the W7 Host? I have not been able to get W98se and W7 to see each other at all using the MS Loopback Adapter on W7. Tried all the networking W98 to W7 advise I could find
online. None of it works for me.

    Greetings 98Guy

Good to see a few still stop by the ME group..

Sorry If I over looked one of your earlier replies..

I reached that age where I forget thing on a minute by minute
    progression..   LOL

Yes the anti virus thing does seem to be a moot point, and I don't even
plan to be on the web with that computer.

But,  you never know when an update might come in handy for some ole software..   ;-)

Currently I'm running "Rufus" on a dos USB stick..

Got most of my use-able software on that.

Only problem is a printer interface, "Rufus" tends to only see "Rufus"

I'm trying  to relearn DOS and all it's little fun things..

    Tks,

again, glad to see folks still on the group..

I guess I should lighten up a little. If a Win-ME CD is all you have, I
guess it's what you'll end up using. I have so many MSFT CD's and
software packages and activation keys available to me, not everyone does...

What do you know about networking W98se running on MVPC-2007

One of our developers has exactly that - MVPC-2007 running on Win-7 and
a win-98 virtual image. I don't use the virtual stuff. I asked him to
check on the drive access between win-98 and host, and there are
settings you will need to mess with on the host MVPC interface. I don't
know if he was able to do it - I'll ask tommorrow. I can tell you that
on the virtual win-98 he can see shared folders on a win-2k system on
    the network.

I can also tell you that on two separate PC's, one running 7 and the
other win-98se, that I can access a shared folder on the 98 machine from
win-7 with no problems. I've mapped the shared drive, probably had to
specify it directly because I probably couldn't discover it on the win-7 machine just browsing the network.

Nothing much new to report, other than we've confirmed that a shared
folder (full read/write access, no password) on the win-98 virtual
machine can be seen and accessed by the host win-7 system.

Just to confirm - we have Windows Virtual PC (aka XP Mode, successor
to Microsoft Virtual PC 2007, Microsoft Virtual PC 2004, and Connectix
    Virtual PC)

    The Vpc.exe version is 6.1.7601.17514 dated: Nov 20, 2010.

That seems to be the only way to share anything between Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 (Not Windows 7 Virtual PC nor XP-Mode) running Windows 98se virtual machines and Windows 7/64-bit Ultimate. I guess I will just have to live with that fact; but it would
be nice if everything operated in the normal networking sense, where all machines in the 'Entire (virtual) Network' were visible and could interact with each other. I have no problem networking virtual W98SE machines locally within MVPC-2007, and no
problem with Virtual Machine Additions 2004 or 2007 Share Folders; I just have a problem with networking Windows 98se to/from Windows 7 on the "Entire Network."

Not that this is an issue in this case - but can you install / use
Windows VPC (XP Mode) or is there a reason you're staying with MVPC 2007?

I guess I will just have to live with that fact; but it would be
nice if everything operated in the normal networking sense, where
all machines in the 'Entire (virtual) Network' were visible and
    could interact with each other.

I can tell you that on separate machines - one running 98se (real, not
virtual) and the other running win-7, that the win-7 machine can see and
access shared folders on the win-98 system (but perhaps only when no
password is set?). I don't know but I suspect that it doesn't work the
    other way around.

I have no problem networking virtual W98SE machines locally
    within MVPC-2007,

Well, I thought that *WAS* your original problem - that you *COULDN'T*
access shared folders between Win98 running in a VM and the host win-7
    system.

    This is what you said:

    ========
What do you know about networking W98se running on MVPC-2007
on Windows 7 to the W7 Host?
    ========

How am I supposed to interpret that?

    I just have a problem with networking Windows 98se to/from Windows 7
    on the "Entire Network."

And like I said, that works just fine for me. Select a folder on your
win-98 machine to share. Naturally, make sure you have File and Printer sharing turned on. Select full-access (or just read access) and no
password on the share. Then go to your win-7 system and select Map
Network Drive, and you should be able to see the win-98 system when you
browse the network. The name you should see will be what is entered in
the Identification tab on win-98 Network Neighborhood properties window.
The Workgroup setting you see there might have to match a similar
setting on the win-7 box (not sure about that).

My W98SE VHDs are images of my original IBM APTIVA with W95 (16-bit OS) upgraded to W98SE (32-bit OS). They do not work in Windows 7 (64-bit) WVPC. They do work in MVPC-2007. [And, WVPC is ruined on my W7 machine; it will not install properly anymore.-
-{Nor will the Lenovo OEM Windows 7 reinstall anymore.}]

I have no problem networking virtual W98SE machines locally within MVPC-2007,

This is a LAN within MVPC-2007 of two or more W98SE virtual machines only, using NBEUI/TCP (like networking real W9x/ME machines). This part of the LAN (same workgroup name) is using "Local" virtual NICs.

Well, I thought that *WAS* your original problem - that you *COULDN'T* access shared folders between Win98 running in a VM and the host win-7 system.

This part of the LAN (same workgroup name) is using the "Microsoft Loopback Adapter" virtual NIC between the W98SE virtual machines and the Windows 7 host (real machine).

    I just have a problem with networking Windows 98se to/from Windows 7
    on the "Entire Network."

The shares do not show up in each others Network neighborhoods (or Entire Network) {Windows Explorer left-pane} directory trees, nor {right-pane} contents; and hence, cannot be mapped as network drives.

And like I said, that works just fine for me. Select a folder on your win-98 machine to share. Naturally, make sure you have File and Printer sharing turned on. Select full-access (or just read access) and no

I am sharing the whole of drive C: on the W98SE VPCs and one special Share Folder only on the Windows 7 machine. I am missing something that should allow these machines to see each other, but what is it? Do I need my W7 machine to be the Server?
