I use android Outlook quite happily on my Samsung mobile with three
    accounts including a Gmail one.
However on my Lenovo tablet Outlook will not accept the Gmail account,
but it accepts the other two.
The Gmail app accepts it fine, but I don't use it because it only syncs
    every 15 minutes).
I use Edison as the next best thing, but would prefer Outlook.

Did you configure the server-side setting in your Google account's
security settings to "Allow less secure apps"? Going back to encrypted
login credentials is not less secure. OAUTH2 has advantages only to the
e-mail provider, like tracking from which host you connect to their
service by using the OAUTH2 token unique to each host.

Sorry, I don't know what is "not accept". Does that mean you get an
error message? When you enter the Gmail account, is it the same one you registered for the Android phone?

    'Unable to add account.'
An error occurred while trying to add xxxxx@gmail.com
    Please try again

    Never even asked for password.
Since I can access the account on other apps I assume 'Less secure
apps' are allowed and they do seem to be if I check via my pc and
Outlook works well enough on my mobile.

Solved that problem by unticking the initial offer and setting up my
Gmail account as if it was new.
Now I cannot set up my other accounts and get error (701)
I think I'll give up as it's not the first time I've tried.

    Aw man
I finally got all three accounts installed and it worked.
    Sigh of relief
I thing restarted the tablet et voila - the whole app has disappeared.
    End of!
