Trouble assigning a macro to a particular function key

I'm using Word 2003 running under Windows 7 on a desktop PC.
I have two very simple macros assigned to f11 and f12 which insert
particular styles. (I didn't need the default functions on those two keys.)
A few days ago, seemingly right out of the blue, the f11 key stopped
working. I tried reprogramming it, but although "f11" appeared in the selection dialogue box when I pressed it, the (newly-recorded) macro itself would not load.
All the other function keys are working perfectly, and when I try assigning
the same macro to other f keys that is also successful: it's solely f11
which is giving problems. I'd be very grateful for any thoughts. Many
