Tutorial Request: How to use LDAP with a large program

Okay, my employer has a large program that they want to protect access to with LDAP. For simplicity, I'll call the program XYZ.
From an implementation standpoint, what does this involve? Basically, I have a small thread that I'll call the Security Manager written in C++. The security manager will protect the program XYZ using LDAP.
What do I install on the LDAP server? And, what do I install on the 100s of clients?
What does the C++ code in the Security Manager have to do? Do you have example code for me?
What else should I be aware of?
How does RFC 2829 fit into my implementation?
