You will need to provide an error message otherwise it's not possible
to find out what the problem is.

    Does your network connection work?

Literally, I’m able to search packages on the repository just fine but it refuses to fetch anything. Pinging Deb.Debian.org results in “temporary failure in name resolution” and my iMac was able to fetch packages just fine during install of the
system. I used a wireless dongle (Realtek 8192CU based) as I don’t have any Ethernet jacks wired up (thanks AT&T for unhooking them for “stability reasons”... not!)

Just recently installed the latest image on my iMac G3, and was hit with issues getting packages. I successfully installed the system with LXDE, and was looking to fix the blinking cursor in the top right by installing the r128 driver along with XOrg.
The install image was able to fetch packages during the installation fine but not now.

Then your /etc/resolv.conf is either incorrect or your DSL router doesn't
    work.

Try adding Google DNS as a workaround with the following command as root:

    echo "nameserver 8.8.8.8" >> /etc/resolv.conf

This is a multi-part message in MIME format.
    I'm using ftp.ports.debian.org, not deb.debian.org

    deb.debian.org should work too ?

His problem is a non-working internet connection, not the wrong server.

deb.debian.org is just a CDN that will always provide a working mirror.

If you're connected with an Ethernet cable, it should work after the installation
if it worked during the installation. But I really don't know what settings you picked during installation.

I’ll have to check ifconfig here in a bit...

ifconfig isn't being used anymore, see:
