• Fwd: Sun Ultra 25 / Debian 12 install/progress

From Ignacio Soriano Hernandez@21:1/5 to All on Thu Nov 9 15:20:01 2023
    Progress report :-)

Ok, so initial OBP config on the Sun Ultra 25:

    setenv input-device ttya
    setenv output.device ttya

(You have to do that hence I had forgotten to do those changes (though unplugged kbd/mouse) and though connected via serial output had been send
to the screen it was not accepting the serial kbd entries).

    boot cdrom

Have been using Solaris 11 Express for installation (in a Fusion VM on my
MB Pro (x86)) and connected via tip to my USB-UART adaptor .. works like a charm.

Installer (coloured VT100) works perfectly ootb (updates also auto
retrived via the onboard Sun Ultra 25 gbe device).
Selected as part of the installer in tasksel (Desktop & Xfce).
    Installer ejects disk.
    Reboot.

    BOOM!

    Loading Linux 6.5.0-4-sparc64 ...
    Loading initial ramdisk ...

[ 7.761835] twice on console to return to the boot prom
[ 7.904298] ---[ end Kernel panic - not syncing: corrupted stack end detected inside scheduler ]---

And this happens via the serial console, no USB devices connected.

So, yes, would need some help :-)

    Cheers

We don't really have a list of supported systems, just systems that are
    known to work.

I wanted to give it a try and can confirm that it boots from CD and gets
    into the "Select a
language" screen but the keyboard is not working.

It should be working. Did you try connecting a PS/2 keyboard?

    Although USB should be working.

    System: Sun Ultra 25, 1 GB RAM, 250 GB SATA, XVR-300, kbd/mouse
    connected to the USB ports

I will try a serial install once I find the adaptor.

Good luck. Let me know if you run into any other issues.

    Hi Adrian,

ok, so I had an "older" D11S64 install CD and retried. Installation went as
you said perfectly (besides the update stuff) and I even could use the kbd
    for installation.

Reboot went once (with errors) up to the login but could not use the USB
kbd. Another reboot and it crashed from there on.

Can you try an older image? I used an image from last year when I
    installed Debian inside
two SPARC T4-1 LDOMs which I have freshly set up for Debian Ports:

    https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/ports/snapshots/2022-03-24/debian-11.0.0-sparc64-NETINST-1.iso

I have seen some issue with most recent kernels on SPARC which is why I
    have currently booted
    one LDOM into kernel 5.16.14.

When you install with the image above, you will be able to boot into
    kernel 5.16.14 from GRUB.

Note: Due to the expired APT keys in the above image, you should skip the mirror setup during
installation which will fail unless you installed the updated Debian Ports Archive Keyring
    package.
