• Installing Debian - Sun Ultra1

From Jeremy Leonard@21:1/5 to All on Wed Oct 11 22:10:01 2023
I'm working to install Debian on a Sun Ultra1. I get an error and a kernel panic on boot.

    Hardware:
Sun Ultra 1 SBus (UltraSPARC 143MHz), No Keyboard
OpenBoot 3.11, 256 MB memory installed

    I've tried using debian-12.0.0-sparc64-NETINST-1.iso from 2023-05-16 09:05 Along with the snapshot from 2023-06-18 18:21.

I verified the SHA256SUM for both files.

I get the following output regardless of which option I choose in grub:

Your problem is the failed attempt to unpack the initramfs and apparently
    the
problem is that it's failing to write the unpacked data somewhere.

Might be a problem with bad or insufficient memory.

Yep. I saw that. I was wondering what couldn't be written to. I'm able to install Solaris, NetBSD, and OpenBSD without error.

I haven't been able to find a authoritative source for the required amount
of RAM. I've ordered more for this machine. I'll have 1G once my order is delivered. I'll try the install again and report back.

I've tried moving RAM around. It didn't seem to make a difference. FYI. The package that fails is often different even without moving RAM around.
Solaris 2.5, NetBSD, and OpenBSD all install and function properly on this machine.

Can you recommend a RAM test program for this device?
